Let's Talk TerpeneS.

Terpenes are aromatic compounds that give plants their characteristic scent. There are over 20,000 terpenes found in nature, and of those, and scientists have discovered over 200 different terpenes are in cannabis. In cannabis, terpenes have potential therapeutic properties, and many have featured prominently in aromatherapy and traditional medicine practices for centuries. The wellness benefits of cannabis are thought to be most effective when both cannabinoids and terpenes are present, due to the “entourage effect” - the synergistic relationship that exists between compounds found in cannabis. For this reason, each MADGE AND MERCER Modern Apothecary product features a unique combination of terpenes along with the CBD and micro-amount of THC.

Read on to learn more about terpenes found in MM 001 LA CALMA.

ALPHA-PINENE

Alpha-pinene is the most common terpene in both nature and cannabis. It may not be such a surprise to learn that alpha-pinene smells like pine, as this terpene is what gives evergreen trees their distinctively sweet and refreshing smell. This terpene is known for its anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving, and uplifting effects.

Also in parsley, dill, basil, rosemary, and some citrus.

LIMONENE

Limonene has a distinctly fresh and zesty aroma. The potential therapeutic effects of limonene include boosting serotonin levels in the regions of the brain that are associated with anxiety and depression.

Also found in citrus rinds, rosemary, and peppermint.

LINALOOL

Linalool is one of the primary terpenes found in cannabis. It has a distinctive floral aroma and has been prominently used as part of aromatherapy throughout history to promote relaxation and is believed to have anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, neuroprotective, anti-depressant, sedative, and pain-relieving properties.

Also found in lavender, coriander, basil, and rosewood.

TERPINOLENE

Terpinolene is described as having a fresh scent, which along with its antibacterial and antifungal qualities that make it a common additive in soaps and cleaning products. Studies are also investigating terpinolene’s potential to reduce the risk of cancer and the growth of cancer cells. In cannabis, it is believed to have an uplifting effect, which is why it is part of the terpene blend in MM 001 LA CALMA.

Also found in lilacs, nutmeg, cumin, tea tree, and apples.

In future posts, we’ll explore additional terpenes including those found in MM 002 EL ALEVIO MENTA and MM 004 ÉMOLLIENT.
