A morning skincare routine for happier, healthier, hydrated skin
Morning Skin Care Routine

Our simple five step routine is a great place to start. From there, feel free to adjust as needed to find the best routine for your skin.

When it comes to creating the best skincare routine, there is no one size fits all approach. There is, however an optimal order in which to apply or layer your products to ensure you absorb all the benefits. Especially as the seasons change, with colder weather and windier days, our complexion can become dry or irritated, and in need of a bit more TLC than during the summer months. With that in mind, we wanted to share some of our top tips for creating a morning routine that will carry you from autumn into winter and beyond.

STEP ONE: CLEANSE

Gently cleanse your face to remove any residue or bacteria that may have accumulated overnight and pat to dry. The cleanser you choose will depend on your skin type and needs, but it’s important to pay attention to the ingredients in your cleanser of choice. We recently hosted an Instagram Live with Dr. Sandy Skotnicki, a dermatologist and skin-sensitivity. Our conversation was a good reminder that in many skincare products, unnecessary fragrances and possible skin irritants may be included in the formulation. When our skin is already suffering from the elements, we find ourselves reaching for moisturizing, scent-free cleansers that contain a minimal amount of functional ingredients so that we can simply focus on refreshing rather than upsetting our skin.

STEP TWO: TONE

In colder months, our skin can easily get dehydrated, so adding a spritz of a non-alcohol-based toner or essence can help to relieve dryness and prepare the skin to absorb the active ingredients in your other products, while also providing a layer of moisture that will be sealed by the products you layer on top.

STEP THREE: SERUM

Serums deliver key ingredients that target specific skin needs, whether that’s combatting free radical damage, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, soothing inflammation or delivering hydration. Serums also work well as a base to layer additional hydrating oils and creams on top of, as they prime the skin to better absorb these products. We are  fans of MM 004 ÉMOLLIENT, a plant and seed-based facial oil that is rich in barrier strengthening, hydrating, non-comedogenic oils, while also delivering a powerful dose of antioxidants from the CBD to protect skin from free radical damage and promote glowing, youthful skin.

STEP FOUR: MOISTURIZER

Including a skin-nourishing moisturizer or facial oil works to provide additional hydration to the skin while also sealing in the previous layers. Similar to choosing a cleanser, the best cream or oil for your complexion will depend on your skin type, but as with choosing a cleanser, checking the ingredients for a minimal amount of safe, hardworking ingredients is a good approach here to avoid any potential sensitivity or irritation.

STEP FIVE: SUNSCREEN

The final step to any skincare routine should always be sunscreen. Dr. Skotnicki emphasized the importance of sunscreen as they key to preventing the visible signs of aging while also keeping you safe from the risks associated with UV damage. The Canadian Dermatology Association recommends selecting a sunscreen with a minimum of SPF 30 or higher to protect your skin. Even if you’re planning to stay cozied up inside all day, you don’t forget this super important final step!

BONUS STEP: BODYCARE

Don’t forget to show love to the skin south of your neck! Our hands and bodies need some extra attention in the colder months too, so why not try out a new body oil or lotion after showering and throw a tube of hand cream into your bag for when you’re on the go.

There you have it, five simple steps that you can adjust to suit your preferences and needs. For best results, try these out, while also making sure you’re drinking lots of water, getting at least 8 hours of sleep each night and prioritizing a balanced, varied and nutrient-rich diet. Ultimately, the most important factor to consider when creating any sort of routine is to find what works best for you and makes you feel good, on the inside and out.

Yours in wellness,
